🧵 Candle wicks
The wick has the biggest impact on how a candle burns. Choose the series based on your wax and the size based on the diameter of your container.
🧵 Wicks Cotton candle wicks Pre-tabbed, pre-waxed cotton wicks are where almost every homemade candle starts: inexpensive, reliable and available in dozens of sizes. See guide →
🪵 Wicks Wooden wicks Wooden wicks give a candle a wide, low flame and that soft fireplace crackle. They look gorgeous, but they are pickier than cotton wicks. See guide →
🌱 Wicks ECO wicks ECO wicks are one of the most popular series for natural wax candles: they burn clean, curl on their own and mushroom very little. See guide →
🕯️ Wicks CD wicks CD wicks are coreless, flat-braided cotton wicks that curl as they burn. They run a little hotter than ECO wicks and perform well in both soy and paraffin. See guide →
🔥 Wicks HTP wicks HTP wicks are built for thick natural waxes and heavily scented formulas: a strong, steady flame, little soot and great ability to draw wax up. See guide →
🏷️ Wicks Wick stickers Wick stickers are small double-sided adhesive dots that keep the wick tab stuck to the bottom of the jar while you pour your wax. See guide →
🎯 Wicks Wick centering devices A wick centering device holds the top of the wick while the wax cools, so it sets straight and right in the middle of the jar. See guide → The most popular series
ECO wicks (cotton with paper threads) work great with soy and rapeseed; CD wicks are flat and versatile; HTP wicks handle more viscous waxes like beeswax. Wood wicks crackle like a fireplace and create a wide melt pool.
Size depends on diameter
A wick that’s too small causes tunneling; one that’s too big causes smoke and soot. Use the chart by diameter as a starting point and always confirm with a burn test.
Frequently asked questions
What wick do I need for a 3-inch (8 cm) jar?
With soy wax, an ECO 8 or a CD 10 is usually a good starting point. You’ll find the full chart by diameter and wax on the site.
Cotton or wood wick?
Cotton wicks are cheaper and easier to get right. Wood wicks add a special touch (they crackle) but need more testing.
When should I use two wicks?
From about 4 inches (10–11 cm) in diameter, two smaller wicks usually work better so the melt pool reaches the edge.
