What wick stickers are
They’re double-sided adhesive dots, usually about 0.6 to 0.8 inch (15–20 mm) across, made to withstand the heat of freshly poured wax. One side sticks to the metal wick tab, the other to the bottom of the container. It sounds like a small detail, but a tab that lifts is one of the most common reasons for crooked wicks, and an off-center wick heats one side of the glass more than the other.
They usually come on rolls or sheets of 100 to 500 and work with both cotton wicks and the clips of wooden wicks.
Types and alternatives
There’s more than one way to anchor a wick. These are the most common:
- Candle-specific double-sided stickers: clean, fast and made to handle pouring temperatures.
- Glue dots: extra tacky and handy for vessels with uneven bottoms.
- Hot glue: a very strong hold, great for candles you’ll ship or big batches; harder to undo if you make a mistake.
- A drop of melted wax: free and always on hand, but less reliable: if you pour hot, it can remelt.
| Method | Hold | Mess | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double-sided wick sticker | Good | Very clean | Everyday use, glass and tins |
| Glue dots | Very good | Clean | Uneven bottoms, ceramics |
| Hot glue | Excellent | Can leave strings | Large batches, shipping |
| Drop of wax | Fair | Clean | Quick tests, cooler pours |
Choosing size and quantity
The sticker should be the same size as the metal tab or slightly smaller; if it sticks out too far, you may see it through a clear jar. For standard 15 mm tabs, a 15 mm sticker is perfect; for the larger clips on wooden wicks, look for 20 mm. For quantity, plan on one per wick plus a cushion for mistakes; multi-wick candles go through more than you might expect.
How to use them, step by step
- Wipe the bottom of the container with rubbing alcohol and let it dry completely: dust and grease are adhesive’s worst enemies.
- If the jar is cold, warm the glass for a few seconds with a heat gun; the sticker grips better and the wax bonds to the glass without gaps.
- Stick the dot to the metal tab, peel off the backing and press the wick firmly in the center of the jar for a few seconds.
- Straighten the wick and hold the top in place with a wick centering device.
- Pour at the temperature your wax supplier recommends, not hotter: extra heat doesn’t help and can soften the adhesive.
Common mistakes
- Sticking to a damp or freshly washed jar. The tab pops loose the moment the wax goes in.
- Pouring too hot. Some adhesives soften and the wick drifts to one side.
- Not pressing hard enough. Count to five while pressing the tab with your finger or a dowel.
- Using regular tape. It isn’t made for heat and leaves residue.
- Skipping the centering device. Even with a well-anchored tab, the top of the wick can lean if you don’t support it.
It’s a tiny accessory, but every well-made jar candle needs one. If you’re putting together your first kit, also check out our guide to making candles.

How to use wick stickers, step by step
- Clean and fully dry the bottom of the container.
- Warm the jar if it’s cold.
- Stick the dot to the wick tab.
- Press the tab in the center of the jar for a few seconds.
- Center the wick with a holder.
- Pour the wax at the recommended temperature.
Tips
- In narrow jars, use a dowel or the end of a pencil to press the tab down.
- For big batches, stick all your wicks before you start melting wax.
- If a vessel has a curved bottom, try glue dots instead of stickers.
- Store the roll somewhere cool so the adhesive doesn’t dry out.

Can I use hot glue instead of wick stickers?
Yes. It holds very well and is great for big batches or candles you plan to ship. Use just a little so it doesn’t show through the glass.
Why does my wick tab keep coming loose?
Usually because of dust or moisture on the jar bottom, not pressing hard enough, or pouring the wax too hot.
Do wick stickers work with wooden wicks?
Yes, stuck to the wooden wick’s metal clip. Look for slightly larger stickers, around 20 mm (0.8 inch).
Will the sticker show through the jar?
If it’s the same size as the tab, you’ll barely notice it. Very large stickers can show through clear glass.
