What wax melt molds are

Wax melts are small pieces of scented wax that you warm in a wax burner instead of lighting. A wax melt mold is simply the tray you pour them into. There are two main types: flexible silicone trays with individual cavities (hearts, stars, flowers, cubes, bears and many more) and plastic clamshells, the snap-shut packs where each cavity holds one cube and the pack doubles as packaging.

Because there is no wick, wax melts are one of the most forgiving projects in candle making. You do not have to worry about tunneling or wick size, so you can focus on scent and color. That makes melts a great first project and a smart way to test fragrance oils before using them in candles. Our wax melts tutorial walks you through the whole process.

What to look for when buying

Choosing the right mold depends on whether you are making melts for yourself, for gifts or to sell.

  • Silicone trays are reusable, easy to release and great for fun shapes. Look for firm, food-grade or platinum-cure silicone that does not smell strongly of chemicals.
  • Clamshells are usually PET plastic. They are single-use in practice but make packaging, labeling and selling very easy. Check that the plastic is rated for wax pouring temperatures; thin clamshells warp if you pour too hot.
  • Cavity size. Small shapes melt and release scent fast; larger cubes last longer. Make sure the pieces fit your warmer dish.
  • Depth. Shallow cavities give thin melts that are easy to snap; very deep cavities can crack as they cool.
  • Detail. Intricate shapes look great but can trap air bubbles and break when you pop them out.
  • A rigid base. A flexible tray full of hot wax is hard to carry. Place it on a baking sheet or cutting board before you pour.

Typical sizes and formats

Most people weigh melts in grams or ounces rather than measuring volume. Use our fragrance calculator to work out how much fragrance oil to add per batch.

How to use and clean them

Use a wax made for melts, such as wax melt wax, or a soy or paraffin blend with good scent throw. Melt it in a double boiler or melting pot, then add fragrance oil at the temperature and percentage your wax supplier recommends. Wax melts often take a slightly higher fragrance load than candles, but never go above the maximum on the datasheet. Stir gently for a couple of minutes so the oil binds with the wax.

Add color with dye chips or a touch of mica powder for shimmer (mica is fine in melts because there is no wick to clog). Set the mold on a rigid tray, pour slowly and tap the tray to bring bubbles to the surface. Let the melts set completely at room temperature, then flex the silicone to push each piece out. With clamshells, you simply close the lid once the wax is firm.

To clean silicone trays, wipe out any oily film with a paper towel and wash with warm soapy water. Dry well before the next pour so water droplets do not mark your melts.

Safety tips

  • Melt wax with indirect heat, never over a direct flame, and keep a thermometer in the pot.
  • Read the safety data sheet of every fragrance oil: note the flash point and the maximum recommended load.
  • Melts look like candy or chocolate. Keep them away from kids and pets, and label anything you give away.
  • If you sell melts in the US, follow your supplier's IFRA certificate and use clear warning labels; in the EU, they need CLP labeling.
  • Do not use your melt molds for food once they have held wax, fragrance or dye.

Common mistakes

  • Pouring too hot into clamshells. Thin plastic warps and the lids no longer close. Let the wax cool a little first.
  • Adding fragrance at the wrong temperature. Too hot and some of the scent flashes off; too cool and it will not bind, leaving oily spots on the surface.
  • Overloading fragrance. More oil does not always mean more scent and can cause sweating. Stay within the supplier range.
  • Popping them out too early. Warm melts bend, crack or lose their detail.
  • Testing too soon. Like candles, melts often smell stronger after a short cure. See our candle curing guide.

Pros and cons

👍 Pros

  • ✓ Very beginner-friendly: no wick sizing involved
  • ✓ Silicone trays are reusable and release easily
  • ✓ Clamshells double as ready-to-sell packaging
  • ✓ Endless shapes, from simple cubes to detailed designs

👎 Cons

  • ✗ Clamshells are effectively single-use and can warp if the wax is too hot
  • ✗ Detailed shapes can trap bubbles or break on release
  • ✗ Flexible trays are awkward to move when full

How to use wax melt molds, step by step

  1. Place the mold on a rigid tray or baking sheet on a level surface.
  2. Weigh and melt the wax in a double boiler or melting pot.
  3. Add fragrance oil at the temperature and percentage on the supplier datasheet and stir for a couple of minutes.
  4. Add dye or mica if you want color.
  5. Pour slowly into each cavity and tap the tray to release bubbles.
  6. Let the melts set completely at room temperature.
  7. Pop them out of silicone or close the clamshell lid, then let them cure before use.

Tips

  • A small pouring pitcher with a narrow spout makes filling small cavities much cleaner.
  • Weigh one filled cavity to calculate exactly how much wax a full tray needs.
  • Mica powder works in melts and gives a shimmer you cannot use in wicked candles.
  • Label each batch with the fragrance name and date so you can compare scent throw later.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between silicone melt molds and clamshells?+

Silicone trays are reusable and you pop the melts out, while clamshells are plastic packs you pour into, close and sell or gift as they are.

Can I use ice cube trays for wax melts?+

Silicone ice cube trays work, but once they have held wax and fragrance they should never go back to food use. Buy a dedicated tray instead.

Why are my melts sticking to the mold?+

Usually the wax is too soft or still warm. Let them set longer, or pop the tray in the fridge for a few minutes to help them release.

How much fragrance should I add to wax melts?+

Follow the maximum on your wax and fragrance supplier datasheets. Melts often handle a little more than candles, but more oil does not always give a stronger scent.
